Loose Parts - presented by EarlyON

Engagement with loose parts supports a wide range of open-ended and creative learning opportunities. Children’s engagement with loose parts is inspired by the world around them. Allowing them to express themselves, build relationships and stimulate growth and development. Together we will create a collection of loose parts that will cultivate a community of belonging within our early learning environment.

Workshop selections:

Outdoor Programming presented by EarlyON (morning and afternoon sessions)

Exploring Opportunities to Play (morning and afternoon sessions)

Our environment sets the tone for learning in the outdoor classroom; where children are born naturally curious of the world around them. Join EarlyON educators and nature enthusiasts as we come together to emphasize the love of nature exploration in the hearts of children. We will discuss how and why it is important to learn from the land. During our time together, educators will be provided with nature based take-home materials that can be used in their learning environments.

This fun hands-on workshop will give you some ideas on how to set up learning experiences using open-ended materials for the children in your care.  These materials encourage children to think independently, explore and create however they want with those materials.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

(morning session)

Special Needs Resourcing Services to support Home Child Care (morning session)

Presented by: Resources for Exceptional Children and Youth

An interactive workshop that will challenge participants’ way of thinking and doing as they explore strategies to respond to children’s individual needs and make inclusion come to life in their programs.

At the end of this learning opportunity, participants will…

  • understand the principles of inclusion, including benefits and barriers
  • rekindle their curiosity and gain new ways of looking at their programs
  • learn how they can enhance their role in planning and supporting children of all abilities.
  • Recommit and reconnect to inclusion.
  • identify new strategies to support their inclusive environment.
  • feel empowered as a professional!

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way that they learn.” ~Ignacio Estrada

Are you interested in learning about supports and services available to you as a licenced home child care provider? If so, then this is the presentation for you! Come join us to learn about Special Needs Resourcing (SNR) supports and how they can support you and the children in your care. During this presentation we will review:

  • The SNR agency supports available in Durham
  • Initial considerations when looking at a child’s chronological versus developmental age
  • Initial environmental considerations and how they can support the child’s development and inclusion within your program
  • Case scenarios to help you determine when/if/how SNR agencies can support you and the growth of the children in your care.

Understanding Behaviour – Getting Back to the Basics (afternoon session)

Difficult Conversations

(afternoon session)

Presented by: Jennifer Watts and Jennifer Cunningham, Children’s Developmental and Behavioural Supports

Getting back to basics of children’s behaviour. In this presentation you will learn:

  • what factors influence behaviour
  • when behaviours require intervention
  • the importance of observation and assessment
  • the impact of prevention strategies to decrease interfering behaviours
  • how your behaviour as an educator can influence the behaviour of children in your care
Presented by: Resources for Exceptional Children and Youth

Do you need to share some sensitive or difficult information with a parent of a child in your care, and don’t know where to start, you are not alone.

Difficult conversations are typically stressful, many people avoid this kind of conversation or find themselves unprepared when they are faced with having to approach this type of conversation. The ability to handle difficult conversations respectfully and professionally is an important skill.

This workshop will review the steps in the process for successfully engaging in a difficult conversation, preparing for the conversation, how to navigate the conversation and tips to remember during the conducting, and concluding difficult conversations.

Participants will leave with information and resources to support them in having difficult conversations that are professional, productive, and thoughtful for all who are involved.

This interactive workshop will include:

  • Types of difficult conversations
  • Our own responses/self awareness
  • Determining if and when to have the conversation.
  • Why won’t they engage and what to do
  • How to build positive relationships with parents
  • Planning and preparing for the conversation
